My background in social work has taught me the importance of community. Here in Artesia, we have a unique opportunity to develop and foster a sense of community that larger cities struggle with. When people know each other, when they have chances and opportunities to interact outside the workplace, something special happens. Our city can, in every sense of the word, be a community. I will work to make sure that opportunity exists for those that seek it.
I believe that a true community is made up of active citizens. I realize that in the past, City Hall has sometimes been an impediment to those trying to get involved in our local governance. No more. I have already worked on making City Hall staff more customer-service oriented, and I will continue to do so. City Hall should not be a place people associate with slow bureaucracy; rather, it should be a place where people can come together to get involved in government. City Hall should indeed be first and foremost, a Community Center.
Artesia Park and the Albert O’Little Community Center are two of Artesia’s biggest assets. The revenue increases that I am counting on from our downtown area will give the City Council the spending flexibility to begin upgrading these facilities. In addition to upgrading the facilities themselves, I would like to see a full calendar of activities, leagues, and community get-togethers at Artesia Park and our Community Center. They are places where families can and should be encouraged to gather and to celebrate.
Artesia is a family-oriented city. An upgraded Community Center and Artesia Park will give current generations the opportunity to further plant their roots in our great city and make staying in Artesia more attractive for future generations. I also believe upgrading these centers and building our city around the families we have will encourage future generations to stay in Artesia and raise their subsequent families right here at home.
